Lee Becker has been a student of Inti Ombak Pencak Silat (IOPS), an Indonesian martial art, for over two decades. Immediately after taking his first class with Guru Daniel Prasetya, he knew he had found an endless source for lifelong learning. Initially drawn to the art's practical focus and use of angles, footwork, and mechanical principles, Lee has grown to embrace pencak silat's holistic nature which includes breathing techniques, meditation rituals and traditional medicine in addition to self-defense and sport combat. In 2006, Lee and his wife left their engineering jobs to spend a year volunteering in Indonesia. During this time, he had the good fortune to regularly train with Guru Daniel's brother Ki Poleng Sudhamala in Yogyakarta. This year of immersion helped to develop strong ties to Java and an appreciation for how Indonesia's culture and languages influence their national martial art. Lee now teaches in Boulder, CO and strives to incorporate this connection into his lessons today. Within IOPS, he is a high ranking black belt and documentarian of the art's curriculum and teachings. In service to Pencak Silat beyond his aliran (style), Lee has held the position of Secretary General for the United States Sport Silat Association -- the governing body for pencak silat competition in the US. Outside of the padepokan (dojo, training hall), Lee enjoys the outdoors with his family and works as an AI/Machine Learning engineer.
